Art and psych0logy - these parts overlap and intertwine. I’m interested in how things are perceived, in how we relate and respond to our perceptions, and in particular the roles of judgement, memory and nostalgia as unreliable tools.
I am fascinated by faces and am amazed at the chaos caused by a minute shift of line. My work refers to storytelling, exploring fragility in the face we put forward to the world, the masks we build over the years, and the truth that hovers under the surface. Dreams and all future possibilities are portrayed here, in the vision of the child and the isolation of fantasy. I explore the impact of an image on the viewer, as a witness to one’s own memories and experience.
Through paint, or whatever comes to hand, I seek to find recognition, meaning and understanding. This process acts as a meditation on memory, loss, acceptance, and the resulting transformation.
Living on Dartmoor has led to the inevitable love affair with ground beneath my feet. Current works are musings and interpretations of sketchbook works arising from walks in this wild, dramatic and infinitely beautiful landscape.
